Stuck is a short stop-motion experiment that I made about feelings of indecisiveness. I was inspired by the book, “Underbug” by Lisa Margonelli, which explores the consciousness of termites. I imagined a story about cockroaches living together in a pipe, and about the dynamics of group decision making. I decided to abstract the form a bit further away from reality and I came to a simple setup with just little blobs of clay and a circular set. Creatively, I was interested in setting a couple simple variables- color, lighting, environment- and then adjusting them in a clear progression to create emotional effect.
While collaboration with other artists is usually an important part of my process, with this project I took an improvisational approach that lent itself well to woking individually. I used my iphone to capture the frames and made the vocalizations with a voice changer app in “fan mode”. The result is a short that is both a bit messy and a bit silly. You can see how it all came together in the video below.
